If I prelighten my hair can I put a darker colour on top?

I prelightened my hair a while ago but was worried about leaving it on too long as I dont want to go blonde. I was wondering if I try again, can I put the pre lightener on and then put a slightly darker colour on top. My hair is an auburn colour at the moment and want to get it to a strawberry blonde colour. I have died my hair so much that I want to get it back to as close to my natural colour as possible (which is strawberry blonde). Any help would be appreciated as I cant afford to pay salon prices.
