What color Highlights should I get?

I'm getting highlights and I have really really dark brown hair (you can only see it's brown when in the sun). I don't know what color I should get. I'm thinking Red (or Auburn) or maybe Caramel. Also do you have to make an appointment with the salon before you get your highlights or can you just come in and ask them to do it?
